Last night in our small group we spent some time discussing a point Jeff made in his sermon this past Sunday (links at the bottom of this page). Jeff’s point went something like, “all things, including good deeds, done for reasons other than the glory of God, are sin.”
If that statement strung a bit or lingered in your mind a bit, there is good reason for that. For one thing, this statement seems at first glance to be hyperbolic, right? I mean, really? GOOD DEEDS are sinful? C’mon… For another thing, this statement must have so much wrapped up in itself, right? This is the kind of statement that needs almost an entire sermon just to unpack, right?
I believe this statement to be truth. But I also believe that a thinking person has reason to feel puzzled or even contrary to this statement at first or even second glance. So, I want to encourage those who embrace the point Jeff made wholesale and those who are wondering what exactly was meant by it to consider the point with minds that are renewed and bibles that are open. I covet the thoughts of my brothers and sisters in Christ. I want so much to hear what you think! What an excellent thing to share thoughts with my Church knowing that we all have the Mind of Christ to graciously discuss and work through the implications of such a thing as this.
To that end, here are a couple of resources to help the conversation:
